It is with great pleasure that GACUK announces that the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation (International Centre for Maritime Research and Tradition NGO) has offered a scholarship of GBP 5,000 annually starting with the 2021-2022 academic session. The Chair, the Council and all the members of GACUK wish to express their deep gratitude to the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation for its generosity and its support of GACUK’s aims.
The Foundation supports and promotes, among its many other activities, maritime history, heritage and culture. It fosters research projects related to the maritime sector and its people and environmental protection, sustainability and resilience. The purpose of this scholarship which is named the “Dr Eirini Saroglou-Tsakos Scholarship” is to support research leading to a PhD award from a UK university in any maritime aspect of Greek culture from the deepest antiquity until the middle of the 19th century. Such research includes but is not limited to: Greek island maritime archaeology, ancient Greek trade and trade routes, shipbuilding, shipwrecks, seafaring and life at sea, navies and naval battles, harbours and anchorages, thalassocracies, maritime sanctuaries and cults, ship and marine depictions in art, as well as past perceptions of the sea.
